Kurunthogai 60 – Kuruntaat Koodali

Paranar Kurunthokai 60

Translation

What She Said (to her Girlfriend)

On the high hills where the short-stemmed nightshade quivers:

a squatting cripple sights a honey hive above,

points to the honey, cups his hands, and licks his fingers:

Likewise:

even if one’s lover doesn’t love or care,

it still feels good inside just to see him now and then

In simpler and more conversational language …..

Does it really matter if your love is not reciprocated? Don’t you still feel good if you can see him every now and then …. and carry the memories of these moments to keep you happy in the times of separation and solitude? A squatting cripple who cannot reach the honey hive above can still pretend to lick the honey and enjoy its taste ….

Sandy … that is probably because this song was written somewhere around 100BC to 100AD and the Tamil they used then, we will probably find it unrecognisable, but then I’ve started devouring this because of the richness of secular writing there is in this era. In the later era’s bhakthi writing dominated …. and human emotions took back seat …. this one was fascinating. One sided love and how the girl reconciles to it ….

Guddi … you’re such a good liar!!! Kitni jhooti hai …
