Undaal Amma …. Purananooru 182

Most people are familiar with Yaadum Oore Yaavarum Kelir, but this is another poem from the Purananooru Anthology that really touches me.  Were there really rulers like this in the Sangam Ages or is this a poet’s description of an ideal ruler?  Someone who he wished could be his King … we’ll never know …. but for me, this is ideology to aspire to …

உண்டால் அம்ம, இவ்வுலகம் – இந்திரர்;

அமிழ்தம் இயைவது ஆயினும், ‘இனிது’ எனத்

தமியர் உண்டலும் இலரே; முனிவு இலர்;

துஞ்சலும் இலர்; பிறர் அஞ்சுவது அஞ்சி,

புகழ் எனின்; உயிரும் கொடுக்குவர், பழி எனின்,

உலகுடன் பெறினும், கொள்ளலர்; அயர்விலர்;

அன்ன மாட்சி அனையர் ஆகி,

தமக்கு என முயலா நோன் தாள்,

பிறர்க்கு என முயலுநர் உண்மையானே

இளம் பெறுவழுதி

There are people  …

Who don’t partake anything alone – even Ambrosia from the Gods,

Who feel neither feel anger nor resentment

Who fear evils that the other men fear but never mull over them or sleep over them

Who embrace martyrdom for honour

Who do not accept the choicest gifts of the world- if tarnished

Who are tireless in working for the welfare of others without a care for personal glory

And – it is because of people like this that this world lives and flourishes.

    very interesting and informative. glad that such people lived. shall we get such stalwarts again. those who reach the helm of affairs must note this point and try to emulate ilamvazuthi.

    What nobility! Considering the highmindedness of the past, what a fall. Thanks, great work.

      Thank you! I do this largely for my own learning but it is great when someone reads it and comments 🙂

    What a great saying it’s -we don’t accept the choicest gift of the whole word if tarnished!

    This poem was written by a Pandian King himself, whose name is Ilamperuvazhuthi. He was not only a King he was a role model to others. – R.HARIHARASUBRAMANIAN, 07/10/2015.
